High Cliffs

You can see an experimental 'labels' feature on this post. Please hold off adding labels to your own posts until I have tested it a bit more. Thanks to Matt for the suggestion.

I see no cliffs!

The verticals and horizontals all work well together with the signage (how long has that word been around?). The tonal representation is growing on me - at first it seems dull but a feeling of a lurking, weak sunshine works its way into one's consciousness.

The tone does make it look like one of those days where you decide to do a coastal walk and then have to get out the water proof clothing!

Is that sign necessary? On my cliff bike ride there are signs which say no 'access to the beach'. I think the signs are no use, anyone who could look down the cliffs and think there was access probably cannot read!

While the signs maybe interesting, my attention is held by the geometry of it all. The contrasts between the right angles of the signs, the askew angles of the fence and the totally irregularly shapes of the grass are worth exploring.

Rex, I was standing on a vehicle track at a T junction to take this shot so the sign isn't completely silly. If it had been a classified road it would have had a lot more signs!

I think that Matt's "geometry of it all" expressed it better than my slightly elliptical comment about verticals and horizontals.

I feel that there is a cliff ahead even without the signs, the lack of evidence of anything behind the fence gives me that going over the edge feeling.

The simplicity works well but I get no sense of height or cliffs save the sign. A higher vantage point to lower the horizon a little?

Odd how we seem to view the sign differently -- I did not get the sense of height or cliffs either. Matt's remark on "geometry" works for me, too -- I would likely have just called it "well designed".

Was this taken in black and white, or converted? The lack of color no doubt helps bring out that "geometry", but I'm often curious about the colors. Perhaps the warning sign was an obnoxious yellow?

The tonality along with the bent (blowing) grasses and sky give this a very somber & cool feel. As such, it has a lot of atmosphere for me and I enjoy the balance of this composition with the fence flirting with the soft horizon of the sea.

maybe it is my acrophobia that pushes the feeling of cliff so close to home for me.
