Happiness is an August County Show

They'd be even happier if it was a Welsh show! But that does look like a fair amount of rain and the central and left-hand figures epitomise the stoic nature of participants at these events in (normally) this sort of weather. The right-hand figure is beginning to look wet! I presume that the guy in white is the owner of the animal - but could be a steward: has anyone told him it's raining?!! You wouldn't have seen the coat and hat on the left 20 years ago: it would have been a sou-wester and a macintosh; now, country folk are into Australian riding coats and hats ... and cigars.

The umbrellas provide a useful backdrop to the three figures and the bovine rump tells it all. But will the judge deduct marks for the bit of straw?

I didn't take the picture "Love is" washing the rear end of your show animal with your bare hands and soapy water after it defecates, but I could have done, several times. :-)

That was a one day show (yesterday), the weather was awful, today it is sunny..................

I wonder if these three people would laugh if they saw the photo. You do seem to have captured a good bit of that never-say-die attitude that is part and parcel of the county/country show.

On a technical note - were these three figures really that backlit or is it something you've done to lift them off the background?

I've just checked the original and the 'rim' lighting is there. My levels/curves etc has exaggerated them a bit.

They don't look the laughing type here! A wonderful richness, in color and in character. The story is well told -- by the men's faces and demeanor, the background of umbrellas and rain drops, and the foreground of livestock. That "bit of straw" even helps out.

I'm there, and quite happy about it. ;-)

I like the four ways to deal with the rain and this is an interesting photograph of some folks who are wondering; just what is that guy doing taking a photo of us? Seen and be seen.

And to the rim light, well done, creates the needed seperation and a three dimensional space.

tough characters just getting on with the job while many would feel uncomfortable.
I can see and feel what is going on here, the lighting and rain are well caught. Not much I can add but well done.

'I like the four ways to deal with the rain '

The gentleman with the hat seems to know best he's about, but for me the picture is made by the knarled finger of the man on the far right. Hands are always fascinating. I'm not sure what those hands say beyond 'work', but just that is enough.

I like this very much. The umbrellas matching two of the three coats. The lack of full beasts up front. The expression of our three main subjects. The English summer weather. It all comes together very well.

What has troubled me most is the photograph that the gentlemen on the far left reminded me of. After a week of scratching around I finally found it: http://tinyurl.com/6ofd3p.
