break
Comments:
The graffiti, the orange frame mesh(?), the black alcove and white wall all very well placed.
A very difficult picture to capture no doubt with large differences in exosure.
This fellow is probably lighting a smoke and about to relax but I don't feel he is there just yet, the blur, the hidden face don't let me feel like a break occuring.
How wonderful a graphic design this image makes. So nice of the gentleman on break to wear black and to stand right there with his white cup and flash the cap brim of MacDonald's yellow. And that bright red in the corner. Even the strange "graffiti" (gopersnuk?) adds just the right feeling in the right place.
It's almost too perfect -- I'm grateful for the smears and dirt on both black and white walls.
I know that it is a coffee or soda cup but to me it looks like he is taking aim. A result more sinister than the components, if described, would suggest.
I agree with Christina about the graphic nature of this image. There is a tightness in the human element, bounded by his arms and the golden M, leading to concentration on his cup and the probable 'lighting up'
I think Christina has nailed it, but I can see what Colin is driving at with the taking aim comment.
The bit of blur - is it handshake - adds to the feel of a stolen moment, one stolen both by the subject and the photographer.
It's the 'imperfections' that lift this out. I have been troubled by the fire extinguisher housing(?) and what ever was above. But the more I looked the more it grows on me. The smears and graffiti and the non pure black are all pleasing. But the balancing act and lighting the cigarette is at odds with all this and concentrates the viewer.
At first I did not like the bright orange at the lower left, but then it adds a counterbalance to the larger dark areas on the right, almost like a focrum. The person leaves me wondering, an unaswerable question. mystery.
Did he just find the label on his cup that won him a new car or other wonderful prize?
Almost like the subject, this photo was reluctant to be seen: exposure was OK but it seemed foggy and the light had reduced shutter speed to 1/50 sec (unusually, I hadn't shifted to ISO 400). It also needed straightening. I can't remember the reason but there was no second chance. I'm glad that it was worth keeping.
