On the Street (04700006)

Comments:
The Brit photographic outlet 'Digital Depot' is running a competition this month on outdoor portraits: this would win I fancy. I love the smoky grey of the sky and the way it heads towards light both left and right above the building. Who needs studio shots when one can get something like this with natural light? The composition works well too, as does the tonal range.
I'm with John on this: that milky background is a joy to see. I'm not so sure on the composition though. Kate is dominating the shot and competes for my attention with the backdrop. I'm wanting to see more of her body so this become much more environmental/fashiony.
Certainly a strong argument for soft and natural light.
I think that this comes across as too much of a head shot. Or rather, whether 'too much' is the right way of putting it would depend on the intended use. As a location portrait of the famous director, great. As a picture of Kate in this particular place, less great.
So I think I'm agreeing with both of the above...
A nice spontaneous feeling to this (as usual with most of your Kate portraits), and as mentioned, the light is ideal. I'm back and forth on the composition -- the graphic designer in me is ready to put a clean simple headline up at the top!
Doesn't this young lady get worried about the stalker with the camera? :-)
I find all your portraits of Kate very personal and showing the relationship you have.
Everyone, thanks for looking. The comments regarding the tightness of the composition are well taken; this could have easily have had the look of a street fashion shot. The tonality from using an old style, high silver content film suggests something like that. Kate is also sporting a new jacket of which she is very proud, so it would have been a natural fit. Next time.
