For what we are about to

Comments:
Even though the expression on the subject's face seems quite deep and serious, the overall tone of the picture is very light and airy. As a portrait I'm not sure it would be one for her album. Perhaps it's that 'rule' of noses breaking the cheek line (and obscuring the right eye) which is conspiring against me/the photograph. However, taken with the title and the tray of tea making 'silverware' it makes for an interesting study.

In colour, this is pure 'Jam and Jerusalem'! I have to ask whether she is WI?

I don't mind the nose/eye wipe-out as this is 'her'. What pushes it in the direction of being something like the WI is that the background looks like a village hall or institutional space. If it's a cafe, they need to sort out their decor! This would have driven me to b/w almost immediately! But I like the observations on dress, 'bling' and the utilitarian tea service.

This has to be the cafe at the Arts Centre.

Like John I'd have probably run to mono, but look what I would have missed. That shirt with that wall!

I'll echo the above comment on black and white. The bright color does bring something extra into it, though I can't decide if the green tray at the bottom is hurting or helping.

After a bit of digging, I found that WI must be Women's Institute?

She almost looks caught in mid movement. This reminds me of another photo posted here right about the time I first started, but I can't remember the photo itself or even when this reminds me of that.

Close, it is the tea garden at Kingston Lacey (National Trust).

Again this was an early expedition with the 50-200.

Did you get the later, SWD, model of the 50 - 200?

It was a gift from Caroline. It is the old version. I now understand the possible advantage of the SWD.

How very thoughtful of her. As you might imagine I might say, I focus and expose manually: the lens is certainly not nifty in that respect but the images make its use worthwhile. However, having moved 'close in' in the last six months or so, I don't use it quite so much.

Christina - yes to your uncovering of the WI!
