Face Painting

Comments:
Well this has caught a decisive moment. The tip of the brush, the nesting of the chin and serious expressions on both faces all come together for a very soft and delicate portrait. The less dominating backdrop in this one hones all the attention up front.

The delicate handling of color in this and your last is really superb Rex. I'm not sure how I feel about the subjects, but the color is really excellently done.

Yeah, where did that green come from and can I get some?

The child is perfection. The adult is perhaps a little too close to breathing steam. Sheer nitpicking I know, because the picture is the child. Great.

I agree that the picture is the child. Had the "painter" turned more to profile, maybe she could stay -- I like the color of the scarf and pink shirt, but in this case I would have cropped all but her hands and arm right out.

"The child is perfection." Yes. A wonderful moment.

The "steam" is probably magical realism! I suppose that photographically I echo Akikana's comment. I think that one needs the woman's head both to complete the action and provide scale: that it is slightly turned away is probably good in terms of giving the child dominance. Also, I would miss the concentration on the woman's face.

I am, however, surprised by the background: I am not sure where this was shot but it doesn't seem to have been at the sort of fair/fete that is normally the venue for face painters. Maybe it is a private garden, or a lone artiste in a park. It does, as Akikana says, become more of a portrait rather than an event: it's not a 'street' photograph. As a double portrait it works very well.

PS Have you recovered from the Fordingbridge 'international'?

The face painting tent was on the edge of the village green. I took a series as they moved, and I moved my position to try and get rid of the roll of kitchen towel! This was the image that I found most appealing. Again this was another outing with my new 50-200, trying to shake off my wide angle brain.

The FCC GJ was superb. I am compiling the official results now. We had 183 entrants and 1684 images. The calibre of entry was very high. Our judges suggested that it we run it again next year, GJ+1!
