red

Comments:
Wow, I love it! Composition, light and facial expression are superb. Congratulations. The dark background helps for the misterious, "master" artist look.
Very nice, the child's pensive face and lighting are wonderful. The highlights on the top of the water jar on the left side and the white and yellow in the bottom left corner, just a little distracting. Finding the dog in this image is a delight.
Doug - you're right about the white and yellow but I'm not so sure about the water jar.
Matt - spot on. I had lightened a version for printing and on the temporary monitor it wasn't apparent so I didn't use the original conversion from RAW.
I have put up a second version with both points above addressed. I'll remove the original in a day or so.
Using red and gray -- related to you? ;-)
The repost is an improvement. The image has a lot going for it. The color and light are lovely, and then of course there is the contemplative painter with a purple zippered jungle vest. Children are so wonderfully unselfconscious. It is bordering on what I'd call "precious", but the water jar and rag (and perhaps the dog) are helping to keep it from going over the edge there I think. I'm not sure about the uninvolved dog. It seems to drag my eye over to that edge and out of the image.
The repost is definitely better.
The dog balances the main shapes well, but I wish it was more involved. Also that its nose was complete.
Other than that, it has been said. A lovely moment.
Perfection would have had the dog looking at the child. The nose of the dog could be recovered with something like RawShooter that gives an extra 60 pixels or so around the image, on my sensor.
Having got that out of the way this is a delightful image, a moment of innocent discovery, great.
The only way that the dog gets more involved is if food is involved!
As to its nose, I place it on a par with the left hand side of the water jar!!
Christina - related? very perceptive!
She does love her leopard skin top (must be the Bob Dylan gene passed down!). As the mother is a single parent, this sort of thing, costing 2USD in a charity shop, is very useful.
Nearly got this spot on. I can live with the half a jar. However, the dog looking out of the shot is holding this back - though only slightly as the artist's expression really brings this home. I hope the artwork was left as is - can see a poppy in it.
