lost fence

Llyn Eiddwen (llyn = lake) about eight miles South East of Aberystwyth.

Comments:
I could look at this all day. Very serene and simple in feeling, but full of interest and some mystery. The color is beautiful.

A barbed wire theme now? ;-)

Yes, very serene. The reflections in the water give it some depth. I do wish there a little something on the left to help balance out the frame.

The open left side doesn't work to hold me in the picture. I think that that may have mattered less if the angle of the fence was more gentle.

Regardless, the water is wonderful to look at, and the fence is rather fun.

Colin might be right about a gentler angle of the fence. The current angle is aggressive, like you really want to look over there.

I find that I like the fence like it is and the four quandrants of the this photograph all seem to work together, each with a point of interest, and I am kept nicely moving about.

Serene indeed. The glass like water is mesmorizing. The fence up front starts off a small series of similar (though at different angles) patterns in the distance.

Further thought: that lead-in triangle is very powerful. You have the fence on one side, open water the other and just enough stillness to see the rocks beneath. The more I look at this photograph the more it reveals. I would happily put a print of this on my wall and there's not many 'traditional' landscapes that I could say that about.

Akikana - thanks for the observations. Also thanks to others for their comments. I am entering this as a print for our annual punch-up with New Quay along the coast so the comments about falling out of the LHS got Jana and I talking hard: our conclusion was that there is probably a contravention of classic composition but other inputs make up for that. I'll let you know what the judge thinks (although she has upset us all in the past!!). It was taken with a marvelous wide angle lens at an equivalent focal length of 14mm.

Most of you will probably have been in contact with Colin since Christian died yesterday. He will be finding a bit of private space.

Christina - I forgot to mention that the Celtic fringe likes to foster a bit of mystery!

Serene was the first word that came to me.

I'm sure many judges would mention the balance and 'empty' LHS but as has been said the triangle of the fence and dark part of the water is a strong compositional element.

This was judged last week in our inter-club battle with neighbouring New Quay. It got 16 out of 20. The judge said lots of nice things, building up my expectation and then said that she found the reflection of the sun distracting!

My other entry, Last days above Tower Colliery (second picture down in Jan 2008) got 19, which was not the way round I expected.
