Sandbank (Mudeford)

Comments:
A strong composition: that Z does all sorts of things along its length and the different play of light on shingle and water livens up the whole picture. Unusually for me, I'm not sure that the picture needs a figure although through reasoning one can say that it points up the lack of crowds: somehow, it spoils the eye's movement along the Z.

Is that the IOW in the distance? Where you are standing is one of the few places on the Dorset coastline that I don't know.

Map HERE

Yes it is the IOW (Needles). It was a particularly beautiful day yesterday and we went for a walk at Mudeford. We walk from Steamer Point to the quay. The tide was extraordinarily low yesterday. It exposed sandbanks that I've only seen once before.

The Z is very strong. I wonder what a higher view would show. Regarding the figure, I don't know. It doe snot really bother nor does it add anything in my opinion. The light is of course great.

Beautiful light. The hump of land in the distance balances out the water in the foreground.

Was the position of the figure a conscious decision?

Lots to look at here - in the sense of there being surprises throughout the photo. It would have been so easy to simplify this further and lose those surprses. I like it a lot.

The figure, and its placement, are positives.

This has been covered well and I agree on most all -- the composition, light, and details.

I find the figure (in red!) a plus as well, though it would still have been a fine image without it.

When I squit down and look at this, I find that I really like and enjoy the graphic patterns, shapes and colors. I almost don't see the figure. With the water just touching the lower left corner and following it out and then the small hightligh water in the upper left and final the top horizontals. A really nice abstract but yet real photograph. Very nicely seen.

Thanks to everyone for the comments. The image was composed around the Z and I saw the red coat and thought that's in a good place but if I don't like it then it will be easy to remove. So the decision was to leave it.

I don't find myself having lots to look at here because the sense of space is so big and is filled with plenty of similar textures and patterns. what does hold my interest is that solitary figure in the distance. I want it in so many other positions than the one you chose to shoot but none of the repositioning adds to the experience. If anything it detracts because the positioning would balance the view up to cleanly and then this would pass in to the realms of a good light landscape moment. Well seen and thanks for the correct positioning of the main subject!

I think the red coat is well placed. Figuring out where a figure works best in a landscape is something I've been giving a lot of thought to, so I was just curious if this was intentional.
