Instruction or Statement?

Nishihara, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo.
Comments:
Whatever it is, there is no arguing! They even make sure that you ex-pats aren't going to be naughty with your bicycles! The line up of roof diagonal and signs makes an interesting frame within a frame. I'm not sure whether your shadow areas are too light - there is some very strong sunlight there and the lighter greys are not fighting it hard enough.
Those poor bicyles across the road are like a shoal of fish seeking sanctuary from a shark.
I get the angles and the cultural stuff, but I'm not sure that its quite enough. My eye is taken nicely though the picture to the road exit mid right, but I'm not really left wondering what's out there.
Not that I think I'd have done any different mind you.
We've had a lot of photos featuring prominent Z shapes lately.
This doesn't all fit on my screen unless I take the browser to fullscreen mode, but the resulting loss of the top quarter of the frame tightens this up.
I've tried Matt's crop and it does change the image a great deal. I think it removes a bit of distraction with the lights and lattice allowing my eye to concentrate more on the cones (the intended subject).
I enjoy deliberately misinterpreting signs almost as a mental exercise. An oldie is "Heavy Plant Crossing" and looking out for the giant chrysanthemum!
They REALLY don't want bikes in that space.
Nice framing as usual and the resulting composition works well enough, yet even with the gang of bikes across the street, I get a feeling it needs something else to complete it. I get to that empty space beyond the storefront and I'm stuck there.
I like the irony of the bikes with regard to the image as well. For me, that the bikes are hiding on the far side makes this a much more subtle image, and from that perspective, I like this a lot.
Thanks for all the comments. I've been trying to make this shot for a couple of years now - I always got bad reflections on the signs. A different angle of appraoch means I can move on to another tricky photographic situation now...and I have a few more on the list to tick off. It's easy to do photographs of 'bad' English in Japan. This one was a little more subtle than most of the usual crop. The Japanese on the sign literally reads bicycles forbidden. Obviously with the space left over and the restrictions on font size they needed to be a little more creative with the English translation. Surprisingly these signs work as there tends to be very few bikes parked near to them.
