In the parking lot of Central High (04420023)

Comments:
I get a strong feel for the snow as a result of the street lamps. The blizzard-like conditions are further accentuated by the thin skein of blown snow extending towards us at the bottom of the picture. The position of the remaining vehicles in the parking lot is serendipitous for the composition!

Great use of light and conditions.

John already said it all. The frontmost car, by being so dark, is kind of menacing, adding to the atmosphere.

'the thin skein of blown snow extending towards us at the bottom of the picture'

I was hoping something like that would make it into the picture, but given the gustiness of the wind, it was really a matter of luck that it turned out so well.

I seem to have gone off black and white landscapes (and that is what I see this as being), and this is a good example of why - I want the detail that the colour layer would provide. Without it my eye wanders around the photo looking for something extra.

I still haven't digested Colin's comment - gone off black and white landscapes eh? Road to Damascus comes to mind!

John,

Somebody will probably disprove me by looking back through my daily photos, but I think it is a while since I've made a landsacpe in mono.

Of course I've no idea what Matt's intention was here. That is, whether he thinks in such categories or not.

I'll have to think about whether I think in such categories.

To me this is about atmosphere more than it is about details -- it is like a still from a film noir. Dramatic light and a bleak, somewhat foreboding feeling -- I expect a shadowy figure in a trench coat to show up any minute now!

Even sot, I do find details that interest me -- the tree skeletons, the house, and what looks like a barricade on the left. Nicely composed with that diagonal snow-filled crack in the pavement.

The light(s), snow and foreground patterns make me feel very cold. My past experience tells me with the foreground patterns, it was probably windy, which coupled with snow means low temperatures and wind chill. A very moody and atmospheric image.

The pool of light is the attractive element for me. It shows up the snow and gives the car its dramatic shadow.

The flow of snow in the front of the shot keeps pushing the viewer out of the experience. Only the strong will continue to look in further and unfold a number of interesting subjects to feast on: the crash barrier far left; the tree to the roght of the car; the house; and the huddle of vehicles on the right. Very atmospheric and noisy: i.e. I can hear that wind blow.

Everyone, thanks for the comments. Some of you might enjoy seeing this in the full context of the day I took it: I woke up, and it was raining..
