Wick Ferry

Comments:
According to the ferryman this ferry was mentioned in the doomsday book and is the oldest continuously work ferry in the UK.

One can't imagine that there were enough people in Wick 1000 years ago to justify a ferry! Seems to be resisting inflation quite well!

I like this: the balance of person and sign/board is good although I'm wondering whether there is an imbalance between left and right with his left arm hidden: but if he's operating controls it becomes more understandable. The texture and colour of his jersey/cardi is very nicely controlled and his expression gives one a feel for his character.

It's interesting how you chose to frame him: I would almost certainly have gone wider and then the detail would have been lost.

It's not working as a portrait given the shadow his face is in. As he is wearing darkened glasses his face needs much more light on it. The tight crop is not giving me more to work with. However, the hand and the general positioning of the subject are rather pleasing. A little more dodging and burning would work wonders with this for me.

I agree that this isn't working as a portrait, but then I don't think that it is a portrait (and it isn't titled as such). This is a picture of the boat.

Maybe Rex will say what he intended.

I think you'll find that he is the ferry!

Does that mean the ferryman is 1000 years old? I'd believe it. That face is practically geological.

There is a very old feeling here in a way -- as if a display in a museum was set outside. The man seems like one of those very realistic, life size sculpted figures. It's almost eerie, and I can't stop looking at that face.

I guess I look at this as a nice environmental portrait, not in the classic sense, but more about who he is and what he's doing. Now, about the angle of that 'box' ;- )
