John, you got me in my sweet spot; subject, tonalities and even the hue, all very nicely seen and done. The only niggling thing I can come up with is the white tone (flowers?) to the lower left of the tree trunk, and that is truely niggling;- )
Thanks Doug! The 'white flowers' are (after checking) holly leaves. In a print they are not quite so bright and ... less offensive? To be honest I hadn't noticed them in the way you mention - possibly because in colour they are far less noticeable.
I love the tonality, and the bend of the tree, but I'm not sure about that big open spot to the right of the oak; it leaves the composition feeling unbalanced.
Matt - I'm with Rex on this one!! What attracted me to the picture in hindsight was the swirl of leaves tumbling down to the tree and then down to the right, so for me that filled the "big open spot".
I can see how Matt feels unbalanced by this but I think there is just enough slope to balance it all out in my eyes. It all feels a little on the edge though as if at any moment it could all come sliding down on you. Wonderful tones (and yes I peeked the histogram).
Thanks for comments. Welsh woods often do have that feeling of sliding down. Not here, but in other places driving on roads below a feature like this is a little worrying!
