Small Tree With Bicycle

Nishihara, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo.

Comments:
There's something kind of creepy about this. Perhaps it's the way the bike is angled into the corner.

Creepiness aside, it's a beautiful image, well balanced and with great tonality.

The tree (is it a bonsai?)/shrub dominates despite being so small, which is good because that then allows the remainder of the picture to be a backdrop. Despite the notional ugliness of the top of the wall it all looks right in a square format.

One can't imagine seeing this in Europe.

I struggle and fail to find a connection between the two dominant objects. The (in my view) odd juxtaposition and the appealing tonality manage to keep me interested, if at loss :-)

I'm not sure if this doesn't fall into the significant bicycle trap, yet at the same time I appreciate the cultural aspects of the picture.

Colin -- I'm now wondering what the "significant bicycle trap" is? Could you explain that or link to something that does?

This image really holds my attention for whatever reason. Agree with well balanced and great tonality. There is a very nice "flow" to it, for lack of a better word.

Christina,

I don't know if it has changed, but there was a time when the weekly photo magazine in the UK could be pretty much guaranteed to contain one bicycle chained to a railing, one tobacco grad landscape, and one homeless person (from a safe distance) in each issue.

To makethis image work for me, I find my self doing some heavy cropping off top and bottom. Too many things going on....if the intent is to create discomfort, then it is a good image.

I just felt that this was a deserted stage set with some odd props remaining. The feeling was created by that boundary in the foreground.

Stephane - the connection is simple - trees cannot ride bicycles. No connection just (to my eye) a pleasing use of space that should otherwise be occupied by a car. I'm not sure that the bicycle is used that often as I often see it in that pose. It just seemed like a rather 'naughty' bicycle given its facing the corner. Thanks for the valuable feedback.
