Benches

I don't know where it comes from, but I am constantly tempted to photograph benches. I almost constantly refrain from doing so, meaning sometimes I fail.

Comments:
It is a nerve jangling crop that you have there.

Everything points to the bin. I hope that it is rocket powered. Its the only way out.

Stephane, then I recommend that you should give in to your inner self and start a photographic series about benchs;-)

The lighting almost gives the impression of one side light and the other dark, as though you have a choice in life as to which side you could choose to sit.

I agree with Colin, you have those benches right up to the edges of the picture, which creates tension.

That's one of the better bench pictures I've seen, and it's all in the light and the crop, although I'd like just a touch more space on the right.

I think it is the crop at the top that leaves me feeling a bit claustrophobic -- I cannot stand up from the bench without losing my head. Sort of an opposite feeling to akikana's statue image.

The light is wonderful, especially as it illuminates the interesting textures on the ground.

I suspect that you wanted to point up the positioning, appearance and size of the litter bin in this public space ensemble. The benches are no great shakes either even if they are solidly made. But at least there is a litter bin. The photo is almost a commentary on the change of aesthetic taste within the public parks department of the local council: an attractive space in the wooded park, nicely paved, and then in comes the bus stop bin and the stop-the-vandals benches.

Like a musician with their standard repertoire a photographer must have theirs too. A white fence, a self portrait (or two), a bench, etc. Well executed photos of benches are always a joy. The lighting in this seems a little 'flatter' than many of your other work but that adds to the grittiness of the scene. All lines lead to that bin and shooting in to the light has given you the added bonus of a long shadow adding a further strong line.

The truncated top gives extra emphasis to the shadows on the foreground. The bin seems almost animated, like a dalek.

Thank you all for the encouragement, enlightening comments.

I agree there should be more space on the right and maybe I could have cropped a bit less at the top.
