Very cold Chicken Hawk

I have not made many wildlife images, thus this being one of the few. This is a really cold Red Tail Hawk, which is also known as a Chicken Hawk in the part of Missouri where I made this image. As you can hopefully see, Kansas City had an ice storm the evening before. This guy and a half dozen of his buddies soon warmed up enough to fly the coop.
Comments:
I'm curious as to the circumstances here -- was this at a rehab center?
Not the usual image of a proud bird of prey, and it is hard to know whether to laugh at its somewhat comical appearance, or cry over its icy plight. I'm glad you told us of the happy outcome.
I really miss seeing the color in those feathers.
The ice-ridden, bedraggled look is both comical and pitiable. The conversion is nice but would colour have brought the ice out more?
The frozen stare compliments well with the conditions. I'd like to see a little more detail in those frozen feathers to really emphasise this chaps predicament.
I am not quite sure if the DoF or motion blur has taken the crispness out of the wings but either way that lack of detail in the feathers diminishes the image.
There is a comical side to this image.
A little more background about this image. It was unbelievable cold and I was not dressed warmly enough, doing the best I could while on a Spring business trip and getting caught in an ice storm. The wind was blowing like a banshee and I was rapidly freezing to death. I was using a portable little umbrella to hide behind, so juggling the umbrella, my hands shaking like a leaf and the wind blowing, I was amazed that anything was sharp. Taken very early in the mornng of a very overcast day with everything being pushed on my digi-cam (JPG before started using RAW. Color is very dull and the B&W looks the best. Not in a zoo, but lakside of the hotel I was staying at. Maybe I will try the ACR 4.1 on the JPG file to see what other magic I can pull out of this image.
Not knowing anything about Chicken Hawks, I wouldn't necessarily peg this as an unhappy bird. There are plenty of cold weather birds around.
I like the feeling of imminent motion here. About to get back in the air after missing its prey and getting an icy bath.
Mono probably helps the bird stand out from the background.
