School Wall

Uehara, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo.

Comments:
I can see that my Kidwelly shot started a school trend....

It is a pity that the mural isn't a mouse.

Oh, and how I want to move the door to the right to create symmetry. Brains like patterns. And what a different photo it would be if it were symmetrical.

Not only a school trend but a wall/window/door trend!

Is that where they lock away truants? I'm presuming that it is not a coal hole.

As to symmetry, I have no problem with the positioning of the door: one bright white elephant balances one mid-grey bear and a grey door! I like those decorations - they have a look of '60s BBC children's programmes. They're economical but very effective: in such ways are cultural norms established.

I find the concrete layers (with the hint of the roof at the top) much more attractive than British school buildings. The photo gives more information than one might expect from a relatively narrow viewpoint.

Very nice horizontals, someone has to like that. Almost like a minimalist painting with the interesting details of the bottom hatch to hold your attention. Has a nice hint of mystery to it, while yet still being playful. A study in middle gray.

I've been having trouble commenting on this -- not because I don't like it, I do like it -- I'm just not sure why. One reason has to be the very spare graphics of the bear and elephant though. The combination of a few simple shapes on a flat wall turn into unmistakable animal faces looking directly at the viewer. The door at the bottom helps remind what I'm really looking at and grounds the image, but those "eyes" keep telling me I'm seeing more.

If it is a child's playground then I wonder if the door conceals a pile of severed children's fingers!

The door adds a bit of incongruity and mystery.

I’ve struggled with this image.

It took me a while to find those middle greys after my 'light' period. Thanks for the thoughts. I have no idea what that little door was for. Next time I'm passing I'll have a closer look. The nursery schools nearby are very colourful and cheerful places. Lots of simple pictures adorn their walls though not usually on the outside like this one. Rex, I struggled with this too. But as soon as I saw your previous post it came immediately to mind as my next post.
