Looking Up (04010032)

Comments:
The patterns are interesting and there are a hint of the clouds beyond. Interesting balance to the image with the heavy dark values of the building on the left and the airness of the open structure on the right. For me, I might crop a little off the top to eliminate the gray mass in the upper left corner to further emphasis the patterns and abstract design.

Doing that crop would be the kind of thing I would do, it accentuates the symmetry. However as said before it becomes a different picture, entirely.

Now I must go through my 'looking up' images............

I'm not sure whether this is supposed to work better if the horizontal bars form a pattern other than that of their function; which they don't for me. But the pattern here is not particularly gripping, nor the the rest of the building offering much. I am looking for the hues that the subdued colour might offer.

John, the pattern wasn't the focus for me. The ladder was. Perhaps I should have titled this something along the lines of "Means of Escape."

Doug & Rex, point well taken about the crop. Unfortunately, cropping out the big mass (part of the hvac system , I think), would have forced the loss of the heavy gray and black lines on the side, which for me are necessary to the idea of the picture. Having said that, I could scooted forward a few feet when I took the picture, and avoided the mass altogether. I might go back and reshoot this, might look for a better sky as well.

I agree that the ladder is the picture, but I don't think it is prominent enough. Not that I'm saying that I have a solution to that or anything.

I had thought about writing a comment about the ladder but decided against. I don't think that the title would make any difference: one sees the ladder but the brain (mine anyway) notes it and then moves on.

That vast expanse of highlight takes on a world of its own if you stare at it too long. I see additional black crosses and then when looking closer in you see all kinds of detail swirling around. Without the hard left hand side I would not have anywhere to rest my eyes so its inclusion is a welcome respite. The ladder 'touching' one of the bars cements stability as well. If it wasn't then I'm sure this shot would 'disturb' me much more. Visually stimulating in a subliminal way!

There is just enough hint of clouds to make me really have to look out past the grid, and the ladder, though small, adds a sort of human element. I can imagine someone climbing it, and that, plus the perspective of the building going up, gives me a bit of vertigo since I have some fear of heights. It is an interesting experience.

For me this is not about the patterns, but about the sense of space "looking up" -- and in that regard, it works very well.
