Cows

This is very recent, about two weeks ago. Location is Junglinster, Luxembourg. The light, the cows, the radio station make an improbable mix that I found interesting.

Comments:
There is something about the tonal range, subjects and composition that makes this image feel sureal.

I was trying to think of the words to describe the feeling here, and I think "surreal" works pretty well for me, too. "Common" subjects given a grand treatment with the large scale, the light, and some magnificent clouds.

This reminds me of those '50s posters exhorting everyone to a bright future where technology would do everything for us. The imitation art-deco building on top of the hill is, generally speaking, the odd one out if you live in the British countryside: there are plenty of masts, aerials, pylons and wires in one's field of view. The light can be more or less obliging.

I was slightly surprised when you said that this was Luxembourg as it could be located in many parts of the UK. It's not Radio Luxemboug then?

Good use of the material.

It is actually the original Radio Luxembourg emitter, dated back in 1932. Today it is the backup emitter, with a power of 1100 KW. The main emitter is now 6 km further, emitting with a power of 4 MW in long waves, frequency 234 Khz. You might get it in England.

There are three antennas on each site, only two shown on the picture.

It is funny what you get out of images. I was going to comment on the antennas as they are a thing of beauty to me, being a radio ham. However I thought I'd keep mum as I would be the only person with any interest.

Some of the antenna tuning capacitors for these long wave length transmitters use sheets of corrugated steel on rails inside buildings the size of aircraft hangers. The sheets are moved round to increase or decrease the capacitance in order to get a match. Great fun!

So how come the IR effect only hit the grass in the bottom third? You need to get that filter fixed :-)

I love the layering in this. Whichever slice I look at seems not to suggest the rest, so the whole is a constantly recurring surprise. Even to the solitary black cow who pegs the tonal range.

Stephane, a really nice image, a lot going on. I like the combination of the herd with the building in the background, especially with the eye contact with the one cow in the foreground in particular.

My grandmother would have liked this; she was a nut for cow paintings, and there's something painterly about this. I think 'surreal,' as Christina put it, is just about right. Although the sky is definitely dramatic, it's the shading on the cows that grabbed my attention. It's almost as if they are made of velvet.

Stephane - I'm sure that a LW radio would pick it up but I no longer have one!

Most car radios can :-)

Great diagonals though I'm not decided (even now) as to wheather the power lines add or detract. They certainly get me to the interest in the background and then those cows bring me back. Would like to see all of the most left hand side and right hand side cows. Minor quibbles for a very impressive and unusual landscape.
