Stan's Smile

Comments:
Nice portrait. There's a lot of depth in those eyes. Wish the ear wasn't cut off, though.

Quite a model! Very well controlled highlights and shadows. Every detail on the face playing its part. A carefully controlled background too! Following up Matt's comment, I think nearly anything goes in a portrait as long as the intention is realised: in other words, if the composition is designed to include or exclude any part of the subject, and it works, then it is allowed!

The picture made me think of John Updike so I looked him up but my memory played tricks and really there is no similarity.

If you wsh the ear wasn't cut off, why not wish the chin was not cut off.......or the hat.......or the body?

I am with John, the image oozes character, what more is a portrait to do?

A good portrait.

Photographically, I'm interested in the use of the landscape shape, the crop, the apparently distortion free close-up, and your trademark use of colour. A lot to think about.

I to am with John on this. Lots to like in this shot and the interesting crop adds a little rather than detracts. The out-of-focus pony tail(?) is a cool touch - it compliments well with the whisks of hair above his left ear.
