Inverness

Possibly too brutal to be called minimalist.
Comments:
Brandt but not Brandt. Certainly not minimalist. But very economical in its use of line to capture the character of a Scottish town. Very well seen and then excellent exploitation of light and shade. Exhibition standard.
The title is a bit tame: how about something like 'steps and tenement - Inverness'?
Tame? You be careful or I'll chuck my Irn Bru can at you.
(Note to foreigners - Scotland is the only place in the known world where neither Coke nor Pepsi is the biggest selling soft drink).
A good study of light, shade and texture bringing together everyday objects of the landscape in to a pleasing picture. I am having real trouble working out that small gap of sky at the top of the stairs. Slice about half a centimetre from that left hand edge or leave it in? Slicing takes away so much anticpation from the drop at the end of the stairs yet the brightness of the shaft detracts from it very close neighbourly shades.
(Note to the Scots: Neither Coke nor Pepsi is the biggest selling soft drink in Japan - that honour resides Ito en and their bottled green tea).
I think you have to keep that bit of sky at the top of the stairs. Cropping it out would change the entire tone of this; there'd be no possibility of escape without it.
I'm with Matt on the sliver of sky - it has to stay. It is one of the reasons for my "...not Brandt...": it has echoes of the Powell/Pressburger film " A matter of life and death". Whilst not being totally of the tones around it, there is an ethereal feel to the end of the wall as it meets the sky.
akikana - I'll leave you to correct the Wikipedia article :-)
Maybe it works if you include the words 'sweet, fizzy and disgusting' in front of the words 'soft drink'. Mind you, I can't vouch for the bottled green tea, although I presume it isn't fizzy. I never got to the point of putting coins into one of the ubiquitous street vending machines to try it.
Does Pocari Sweat still exist? Or has it undergone an internationalising rebranding?
I definitely would not want to lose the sliver of sky at the top of the stairs.
There is just enough detail in the shadowy part of the steps (looks like it might be tough to print though).
Film suited this subject -- something about seeing the grain in the sky appeals to me. In fact, everything about this image appeals to me.
Pocari Sweat is still going strong though it has more rivals these days. There's also Calpis to quench your thirst - which always raises a chucle amongst the English speakers...
I'm in favour of keeping the slice of light but for such a small pices of the area of the photo it commands a significant amount of attention and power to the whole.
I noticed the way the building in the background 'reflected' the wall and handrail.
A pleasure for the eye.
