For Stéphane

Some time ago, Stéphane set a challenge (on my blog) about creating photos on cloudless sunny days. This is a part of my answer: filter the light.

Comments:
For me too.............

This is a good choice of venue for those days with harsh light. I've never thought of heading for the woods in these circumstances.

The dynamic range is well contained and the shadows in the foreground are just magic.

I am again amazed at how you get a "put-together" image out of a scene that appears to be rather chaotic -- with so many elements -- none of which stand out on their own.

If this was a day with harsh light -- the tree "filter" worked very well. There is an appealing softness overall.

Shots in woods are very difficult. I imagine that the relatively immature state of the trees helped here (or maybe they're just struggling to survive) but it is a clever shot because one can see the water as a coherent part of the picture and not just as a tiny glimpse. It's interesting that there is just the faintest hint of a track leading diagonally left from the top right of the rock. Good greens! Not quite downtown Baghdad though - those M8s get around!

The trees are a mixture of birch and oak - both just coming into leaf. The weather was sunburn weather. Quite remarkable for early May. Still nearly two months off midsummer and about 11am - hence the shadows.

This is traditional oak woodland that is being rescued from the rhododendron menance (the rhodies strangle the oak saplings and the wood stops regenerating). The birch, of course, gets in first, but the oak will grow up through that.

I think this is still a little chaotic for my taste. Despite that, I wish there was another tree in that gap just left of center.

Busy for me too but it works - just. The highlights behind the trees bring this all together as you want to find your way through the mayhem and into the calm behind. Good detail throughout given the weather conditions.

Thank you colin! A fine example indeed. I am intrigued by the white mass in the background. Is it mist?

Stephane,

The lower white area is a loch reflecting the sky above. The first horizon is the near shore and the second is the far shore.
