Zeiss - We Make It Visible...?

Honshio-cho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo.

Comments:
Well it made me smile and think carefull about what I was 'seeing'.

Knowing who Zeiss are helps with the humour of the shot.

I wonder why the hedge and tree are presented that way, are they intended to be viewed from inside the building?

Humorous and also well designed image. I like all the rectangular shapes and neat, clean layout of them.

Any idea what that tree looks like? I have an urge to go look up inside at it -- which makes this seem even funnier.

This is a minimalist, near-abstract picture that might work even better without Zeiss; the sign tending back to reality. The shadow area on, and in front of, the shrub seems pulled out but the effect is to help move away from reality. It's interesting how the portion of pavement visible is vital to the overall composition. Looking at it for any length of time induces a desire for more contrast but that provides good creative tension: a rather fascinating piece of urban surrealism.

My first reaction; this could use a bit more contrast. Second reaction: well, like Christina, I want to poke my head up in there.

That hedge and tree mural is very well painted :-)

I don't think it needs to say Zeiss, but it does need to say something in order to help sort out the planes. Possible something Japanese would have been more in keeping with the minimalist approach.

I think, contrary to what Matt has said, extra contrast would spoil this. The hedge and tree both benefit from the low contrast, is-this-screen-printed, style.

I hadn't made a connection to screen printing, but it's an interesting thought.

Setting aside the question of contrast for a moment though, I'm struggling with certain aspects of the geometry of this, namely the tilt and the slight bit of perspective distortion. I want the photographer to crouch a little bit lower and tend to that slight list.

Things like this have been driving me mad in my own photos lately; I seem to want all the boxes to line up in a way that they rarely do when working with an RF. Perhaps this is my own punctilious cross to bear.

You are not alone :-)

I thought of making the crouch comment as well, but decided that this was best seen as a passer-by would see it, and that is what Guy took (or so it looks).

Since I visualize myself crouching - instead of Guy - I suspect that the crouch comment is about my own photographic problems and not even about this photo in particular.

"Zeiss - We Make It Visable" is the company's quotemark(?). Obviously it hasn't been well received or acknowledged in deepest Tokyo.

My recollection is that this is all of the tree you can see. I was planning to go back this weekend and confirm but a nasty cold has put that on hold.

As for angle of shot - I was shooting in the sun and that background is mighty reflective. I think I was crouching a little in order to keep the sun out of my vision.

Thanks for all the comments.
