Walker in the Snow (03400035b)

I'm leaving for a week in Paris in 24 hours. I won't be online till I get back, so I'll catch up on comments then.

Comments:
Nothing much wrong with that! Even the low-key white of the snow has its role. Don't trees play well in the snow?! One comment for the city planner: he planted the nearest tree too close to the lamp! The circular cat's paw ends up as the focal point after a while. Warmer in Paris - for the time being.

That's a shot where everything is exactly at the right place, creating harmony, purpose, interest and pleasure. I like the convergence of curves and straights, the person animating it. Very very good in my opinion.

Immediately liked this. The more I look, the more I like. The paths through the snow, the trees and especially the snowman-like figure -- it all works together so beautifully.

I do wonder what it would be like to see the tonal range widened a bit, but then again, that might ruin the mood.

Not much I can add. Geometry great. Tones convey the feeling. Much better with the person than without.

I do find it interesting how my eye gets drawn to the cats paw (drain?). I wonder if that would be the case on a larger copy/print or is it parly caused by the compression (that sort of patterned object comes up with compression and sharpening sometimes).

The first thing that drew my attention was the 'cat's paw'. It is interesting that it has the same effect on others. I think it is far more compositionally significant than the 'walker'. The line of lamps and trees is very powerful and the 'paw' is in that line. The 'paw' is also highly symmetrical.

The tonality of the shots adds much to the bleakness of its content. Hard straight lines top left give way to the more pleasing arcs. That cat paw print just throws all the uniformity out of the shot as does the person. When I first saw the shot on your website I felt that the person should be a little further along in his walk to balance out that cat print. The triangle bottom left needs calming down to merge in which its surrounding - the diagonal is the wrong direction. Well spotted, composed and executed.

Thanks for the comments. The cat's paw is a steam vent; the campus power plant is just out of frame left. I might take it out in a print.

Because of the amount of snow in the air, there just isn't much tonal range to play with here. I've actually already bumped the contrast up considerably.

I thought about cropping out the perpendicular diagonal at the bottom of frame left, but part of me feels it is necessary for balance.

A half second later on the shutter would have been better. By the next frame - last of the roll - the walker is too far down the path.
