Still Life (03490029)

Comments:
Ar first I thought: oh no, not a Still Life - our Phot Society has a Still Life competition in two weeks time! And my entry is going to be from outside. But I like the seemingly natural placement (indeed it may be entirely natural) of the vase on the table with a corner of the picture to emphasize that. In monochrome it is the form of the leaves that is the strong point: the left hand leaf seems to hold the tulip as a hand would a head. Nicely done.
Here is a type of photography I haven't really tried, but greatly admire when it is done well. This seems done well to me -- the corner of the frame and the imperfect, creased cloth keep it from being too studied. Black and white in this case works for me -- the flower color might otherwise distract from the graceful shapes and forms of the main subject.
I am not a gardener but my favourite flower is the tulip. I love tulips for their curves, simplicity and delicacy. The curves of the vase and the simplicity of the image do the tulip justice.
The picture frame adds to my enjoyment..........I don't know why.
Well seen, and well taken. Can't think of much to add....a picture for the desk during the non-flower months. Definitely one I could keep returning to.
Superb. From the illusion in the vase to the contrast of straight stem and curvy leaves off at a tangent and cupping the head to the edge of the picture frame just plying for my attention. The basic wall adds to the simplicity and the slightly ruffled table mat creates a sense of not staged. The whole frame is used very effectively. The shadow on the wall is the icing.
I appreciate the comments. I've been drawn to still life for a long time, but I'm not very good at it. I tend to make it too complex. This shot was my second choice behind a much more complicated shot in a different part of a friend's house; the light wasn't great in the first location, so I settled on this. It seems to have been the right choice.
