Sign of Life

Comments:
An interesting object, well recorded.

The, I presume, natural slope of the ground has ended up looking like a camera tilt. Not sure that that observation adds anything, but, anyway, my mind wants to tug down on that bottom right corner as I look at the picture.

Quite an interesting object for sure -- do you know what it is about? Not that it is important -- the mystery is part of the appeal. Contrast seems a bit high to me, which might actually add to the solid, weighty feeling of the stone -- but I'd like to tone the highlights down a bit in the leaf matter.

Is that a holly or a laurel?

No problem with tilt for me (the near enough vertical on the right provides reference) but I do agree about the brightness on the leaves - no doubt a bright day. I am presuming (without anything but guesswork to guide me) that this is in a Jewish cemetery.

I'm not sure about the effect overall - the brightness gives good bas-relief but leads to tension between the foreground and the stone. The little tree comes out OK though!

We had a three & a half hour tour of the Jewish Quarter of Praha and this was taken in the Jewish cemetery. There are very few verticals in the cemetery. It is several metres higher than the surrounding town as burial had to be within the walled cemetery and was 'multilayered' due to use.

At home, on my monitor, the burnout is quite acceptable, here at work it is awful. I'll see what I can do to reduce the distraction. The lighting was harsh and was almost in the plane of the stone. Not long after this the lighting lost all its drama.

The reflection from the foliage gave the stone a rather odd colour, which I reduced. The background was distracting and I darkened that.

Amended.

It's better now - the stone looks slightly more 'at home'. There are one or two leave that are still too bright but the clash has pretty well gone.

If you get two comments, it is because it looked as though the first one disappeared.

I will not be using a well calibrated monitor again until Thursday, but it does seem better now.

This doesn't come together for me. It took me a long time looking before I could connect the title to the little bits of green.

I could hazard that this was a gravestone before the commentary confirming such. However, I do not believe that this single shot is strong enough on its own. Perhaps a few steps back and a wider shot bringing in more background would help if in single shot presentation. However, as part of a bigger group of other shots from this location it would work well by adding detail to wider shots of the stoneware. Given the vast range of contrast in the shot the highlights have remained in control. The shadows being suitably dark given the environment.
