Kinjo's Parking Lot, New Year's Eve

Technically terrible -- this was one of only a few images from that night where I didn't use flash. But it is my favorite and best conveys the scene as I remember it.

Comments:
This looks like a scanned print.

I find it a bit difficult to be sure that I know what is going on but there are enough visual clues to determine that enjoyment is there.

This looks astonishingly like a painting - and apart from the visual feel of it, I also get the painting like impression that each figure has been carefully placed to create the scene.

I suppose that contributes to me feeling like I'm not there, but that I'm seeing some idealised version.

The two figures on the foreground left are wonderful.

Colin -- thank you for that -- I also thought it looked like a painting, so much so that I am considering making a painting from it. (though maybe it should just be left as it is)

I was insecure about posting such a poor quality image (not a scan, digital using very high ISO and also bringing up the exposure in PS), but took the Paul Butzi article to heart. Getting that confirmation from you was definitely worth it.

I certainly like the title. I also like the composition, both people and lighting; particularly the light area top right and the row of dots of light a quarter down. I am not sure about the "painting" comparison (I can see why but don't fully agree) and would prefer the PS work to give a bit more contrast, even if I think that atmosphere has definitely been captured. I tried converting to b/w and find that that defines the figures better - but each to their own. Camera noise is always debatable, but for me this strays over into too much. You ought to try a Fuji F30!!

All that said, it conveys well that New Year's Eve is somewhat warmer down your way!

The two on the left and the one on the right with the hat are of most interest in this shot. However, the remaining people in my line of site are crowding me out of what is of interest in front of them.

Yes I see flashes of light so I assume a bonfire or low level firework display. Whilst I'm curious for a better look all those people in my way deter me. The four central people seem uninterested in the performance looking at their body positions. Another reason not to get to the front.

I too see the painterly effect of the photo. However, given all my comments about the crowd blocking my view and the painter's ability to paint what they 'see', I don't think that thinning the crowd would work.

I am still troubled that I am not seeing enough of what's being watched to pique my interest yet I'm sure that too much would work the same way.

Even in the brief time between these two posts the picture grows a little more on me and only because the two left hand people are so strong countered with the matched hat guy to the right.

That's the best I can do at present but with some more viewing I hope to become a little clearer in my reasonings for this shot...
