A Dog

Nishihara, Tokyo.

Comments:
I'm more accustomed to stags heads being presented in this way, but each culture to its own, I suppose.

Eventually one becomes used to the head, but it does leap out of the picture in a stag-like way. Not a deep shot but plenty of visual attraction around it. I feel sorry for the dog being eternally frustrated up on the balcony - although, no doubt, that is where Rex would rather have him!

I keep expecting to see that left hand wall move to the right and chop off the dog's head (Have you seen the spoof Ford Ka ad with the cat and sunshine roof?)

I like the eye contact and the visual surprise of the dog's head.

Visual surprise is right! The dog's head does look like it is mounted on the wall at first. Rather funny, though not for the dog I imagine. I find myself wondering if he can get his head back in there or is stuck. His face really dominates the image -- it is hard to look away from it.

It took a lot of looking before I realized that there was a little gap in the wall there.

You've got a very strong diagonal going with the railing; I'd be tempted to make even more of it by cropping a bit from the bottom and the right side. With the trees and the window acting as a border, I think it would be a stronger composition.

The resemblance to mounted stag's head was a surprise.

I was contemplating which of two shots to post last week when Ayumi (my wife) pointed and said "I want that one" (we've been watching Little Britain for the first time ever as it's only just reached our shores).

Upon receiving the feedback I went back to her and asked what she found scary about the shot: two things - it's a floating head and you don't mount heads of dogs...

I only shot it as I thought it was quite interesting how he'd jammed his head between the brickwork and I was interested in how this could be manipulated through the camera angle. The way the head pops out from the brickwork was an added bonus.

Thanks for the feedback.

Akikana - 'Little Britain' left our shores unnoticed. I never watched it!
