Viennese wall

Comments:
This image has a number of the features that 'ring my bell'!!!!

Simplicity whilst maintaining interest.

Monochromatic whilst having subtle colour.

Pattern and texture for eye food.

and

Echoes of shape, the anti-pidgeon spikes and the stains on the walls.

More please.

Hey, John. Too much colour! :-)

My first reaction was like Rex's - more please. Then I thought how difficult it would be to sustain interest with a room full of similar images. I think a group of, say, four would be great, whereas a group of forty would be, er, less great. Interesting.

Anyway, the single image (all groups are in my head!) is great. What's not to like?

Can an image in which spikes feature prominently feel too soft?

Indeed, what is not to like about this. It is pretty much ringing all my bells. Great contrast and texture. The spikes add an extra edge of wondering if they were used to make much of the texture before being place in their final resting position.

I Concur with the above. I'd also like to add how well this works as a square image.

Thanks for comments. This is not the sort of image that I go out to take, so you won't get too many of them. It is also, unusually for me, cropped from a symmetrical take with an equal amount of black on the right.

As to how many in a 'group' or gallery hanging, I think that that depends on the space, the overall idea of the exhibition and the viewer's state of mind. An exhibition of Rothkos works well enough!

I am presuming that the comment on softness is something to do with the texture of the wall as opposed to the technical sharpness of the photo (which seems to be sharp enough). I don't suppose there is an answer to your question - something personal.
