River Cafe, Ranelagh Gardens

The River Cafe is a small, unassuming but interestingly decorated cafe under the railway line a minute's walk from Putney Bridge Underground (but above ground) Station. This photo is a result of being attracted to the decor and trying to capture a rather fluid group, including the owner. The composition of the cafe was more important than the group.

In colour!

Just to prove that I do sometimes make colour pictures.
Btw, it is a moth.
Wedge

From the Ironbridge Museum of Steel Sculptures.
This is a very small part of a very large sculpture.
The sculpture is black but I positioned myself to get the reflection of the surrounding vegetation.
I forgot to say that I had emailed Pam who owns this museum showing her some of the pictures I had taken. I asked for her help in attributing the original work.
This work is 'Wedges Mill I', 1980, by Roy Kitchin.
Roy was Pam's husband and they started the museum together.
If ever you are in the area it is worth a visit.
We went on a Monday and commented that it was very quiet, "That's because we're closed Mondays" said Pam as she gave us the guide to go round!

Stream

I frequent one of those mass photography forums where people click to vote for images that they like. I've uploaded very few and tend not to get too involved but I have noticed that a certain kind of landscape image is very popular. The above is an attempt to replicate some of the characteristics in post processing that many of these images have. Strange and other worldly colour casts, dodged out water, selective increases in contrast and lighting. The resulting image resembles the original in composition; I can't say much more than that. I'm curious about what we think. Does the treatement destroy the image or does it have its merits? My treatment is not as agressive as many others that I have seen (sky is not deep purple for one).

313 (02930125)

One of the first from my new D80. I'm staying with my girlfriend's parents in an old Midwest railroad and river town, so there's tons of abandoned and decaying buildings downtown along with at least one really good coffee place that also has a rocking beer selection :-) Between the coffee, the beer and all the old buildings, I've got a lot of photographic inspiration.

a Meyerowitz moment

I rather enjoyed watching the video linked to on Auspicious' site for 8th September: Joel Meyerowitz telling us how to do street photography. One of his 'targets' was a dog-walker. I had only seen that before in Buenos Aires (before the peso collapse) but here it was in Neal Street, London (2005). Believe it or not but I was pretty well unseen! In hindsight a lower view point would have been more fun but then I always like to get context, which is perhaps why I'll never go for 'full-frontal' street photography - I always want to get in as much about the background and surroundings as possible.

The last from a short sequence available - here - showing wranglers driving the horses to their

pumping gas

Agit-prop against global warming. It is difficult to use photography to highlight what is happening with global warming in a reasonably scientific and unemotional way. Every now and then I feel moved enough to give it a try. Two hundred miles from Heathrow and yet we are beneath the flight path to the US and Canada. The climatic conditions on this day resulted in an effect akin to overlaying individual exposures as the contrails stacked up.
