Another Place

According to Antony Gormley, Another Place harnesses the ebb and flow of the
tide to explore man¹s relationship with nature. He explains: The seaside is a good place to do this. Here time is tested by tide, architecture by the elements and the prevalence of sky seems to question the earth¹s substance. In this work human life is tested against planetary time. This sculpture exposes to light and time the nakedness of a particular and peculiar body. It is no hero, no ideal, just the industrially reproduced body of a middle-aged man trying to remain standing and trying to breathe, facing a horizon busy with ships moving materials and manufactured things around the planet.

Comments:
Sefton Council had refused to extend permission allowing Another Place - the sea sculptures created by Anthony Gormley - to remain on Crosby Beach.

But the council said on Tuesday the naked men statues could stay while a planning appeal is considered.

I had heard that these statues were going to be removed for safety reasons!!!!! I just thought they were magnificient and your image puts across the emotion beautifully.

I'm not sure that I think that the statues are magnificent, but I do think that they are rather fun and this photo makes a good use of that aspect.

A gazing statue given something to gaze at. A fine image John.

I wasn’t aware that this guy was a statue until Rex posted, though I did think his pose slightly suspicious. Those hands you see……

There are 100 of these replications of Anthony Gormley's body placed along a stretch of more than two miles of beach. I have added Gormley's own artistic statement under the original post.

I would agree with Auspicious that these are not magnificent bodies but the end result is infinitely intriguing and brings art to people who would normally not think of looking at sculpture. The locals love their 'iron men', with the exception of surfers and a few others who are bringing the Health and Safety case. In fact, the intallation originally had a timescale so the recent debate seems a bit contrived. As I understand it the next site is in the USA (the first was in Germany).

We were there for a day in April with average photographic conditions. It is difficult to make the most of it but no doubt some ideas would work out better than others. Because of the huge distances, I spent most of the time with a telephoto lens fitted to avoid a dot-in-the-distance syndrome.

There are 22 shots, including this one, on my site:

I'm wanting a little more space between the from of the boat and the statue. Failing that, then a much tighter crop around the edges would help me balance this out a little better. Great use of shadow on the statue to make the viewer believe it a real. I too would not have guessed this as being a statue.

I took a sequence of the ship passing that included a shot with more space - both fore and aft. But I chose this one!
