Wrangling

The last from a short sequence available - here - showing wranglers driving the horses to their
over night pasture in the fields surrounding the ranch.

Comments:
There is a beautiful atmosphere portrayed in this image. The light and dust hide the detail in the background and this makes the horse riders stand out. The fences guide my eye into the riders and the light.

Why the 'Fun'

Rex, FUN is the brand used by the ranch.

Nice light. Something is a little off on the composition, but that light and the dust work so well that it doesn't matter much.

BTW, this one is particularly nice.

So you're signing up with John Ford as cameraman are you?! Nothing wrong with this and the backlit dust couldn't have been staged better! The dark timber bottom right gives the the picture a nice contrasty oomph. Our unmetalled drive looked a bit like that this summer, but without the horses! Very atmospheric.

The last place I got shots like this was in Chile, where the huasos (equivalent of gauchos) learned to ride without saddles. You still get people riding on horses in the poorer parts of Santiago.

Well, gosh, I hope you had dust protection for your digital sensor (or was this genuine mono.....in fact looking at the currrent front page on Stills we are in danger of becoming a bit of a mono monoculture). And FUN indeed. It looks natural and unposed, yet you've got lots of elements in it (the sign, the crosses on the right, the light on the gate) which hold my attention.

We have the occasional horse trek going past the door, but there is never that much dust around here. Mud is not as photogenic!

Fun shot. The dust really sets the mood. I can hear the 'clop clop' of the horse hooves in my mind when I look at this photo.

Not entirely sure this conjures up FUN. Looks like a lot of hard work to me. Very moody. Very quiet. The fences front right are a little on the dark side compared to the rest of the picture. Not that it detracts from the focus...it merely diverts my attention for a period. A tighter crop may add to the mystery of where leaving FUN takes them to..
