Portland Bull

Comments:
I am wondering about a diptych with County Show?
Taken at Portland Bill/Bull!!!!!!!!!
I thought this was rather good (link)
I presume this is carved out of the local stone but is it in situ or placed somewhere else? The marks of the sculpting are shown well.
It would make a good diptych with the county show but I think that this would benefit by being made more abstract (which would also match the other shot). Perhaps a crop immediately at the bottom of the black of the nostril, below the ear and a bit either side.
The link is rather fun. I tried a number of observation spots but couldn't make out the old breakwater (haven't been there for a number of years); has it been removed or is the resolution insufficient to show it?
The sculpture was in the Sculpture Park and stone carving workshops in Tout Quarry.
This sculpture was recent as the sculptors were still working (I regret not taking more pictures of them). They were all German, I joked that it was a long way to come and vandalise lumps of stone. There were a large number of partly completed sculptures where they were working. I am not sure if they leave them there or move them when completed.
The quarry is quite large and the sculptures are dispersed around and hidden. We got 'lost' and had difficulty getting back to the car. I knew exactly where we were and where the car was but unless you are a rock climber those two pieces of information are insufficient!
After I asked the question about the diptych I realised that there was too much of the sculpture, or insufficient of the bull!
I don't know Portland very well, it was only our second visit, so I don't know the old breakwater.
You didn't say whether the scultors appreciated the joke!
I find the sculpture oddly reminiscent of a cast rather than something cut from solid stone. I wonder how deliberate that this is.
I've taken a long time to comment on this photo, because, as is often the case, what I think about it depends upon my mood. Is it just a humble snap of somebody else's work, of is it something that I would hang on the wall. On this, my most upbeat day for a while, I would be pleased to hang it. I like the repeating patterns of the circles and ovals. I like the warmth of the colour. I like the repeat of the diagonals, and I like the framing. Probably much more interesting as a one eyed bull than the original sculpture by far.
That eye is quite intense, isn't it.
..so is that nostril. Interesting play between the two. The strong vertical strokes lead me to want something stronger along both top and bottom borders.
