Spring

Ginza, Tokyo.
Comments:
Very difficult not to see Ginza as a French word here.
What an absolutely marvellously simple and wonderful photograph.
And somebody comes along to stick the leaf buds on when the shutters go up. Perhaps a pavement artist is waiting just out of sight.
I find the whole mood of this to be one of calm. It has a tranquility which is very strong. I love it.
Why in non-Japanese script, I wonder? Good composition that utilizes all the material deftly - the French word makes me think of this as the visual equivalent of a trio by Ravel.
I can't help noting that you convert (shoot?) your b/ws tending to the lighter side. I almost wouldn't dare go up there! Very intriguing.
Thanks one and all for your feedback.
John: I'm shooting Ilford XP2 which alledgedly loves those highlights. I try to get the blacks and mid tones sorted post scanning and leave the highlights to their own devices. Perhaps I now need to pay them some attention as I prefer my end pictures a little on the dark side.
There is a lot of non-Japanese script in and around Tokyo. It's cool to use a bit of English in your business. Some of it is badly used and grates native speakers. Others (which mainly appear on t-shirts) are very 'rude' and sometimes make me blush. I have a photo with an interesting bit of graffiti on it which totally makes the shot. But that legendary 'f' word looms large in the shot and I'm not sure how others may take it...happy to display if you're interested.
I took this Ginza shot early in the morning before the crowds throng this shopping district. Ginza is full of top brand name fashion houses plus department stores (Printemps being the only foreign department store in Tokyo I believe). More recently, in keeping with this location, Leica have opened their very own shop. More like a museum than a shop though...
One final thought: If film is dying/dead then why are Fuji spending vast amounts to advertise Fujifilm on the advertising boards surrounding the pitches at the World Cup?
The Ilford seems to be doing its job well!
I would not be averse to any swearing on t-shirts should you ever decide to post!
As to film - Auspicious fights his corner for film as, I suspect do others. Could Fuji be using this as a bid to penetrate the subconscious I wonder? It's easier to push the name Fuji in association with something (still) understandable and simple; it's more difficult to say buy my Finepix this or my F-.. that.
Rather than set rules in advance, if a member has a photograph that they are unsure about in terms of whether others would find it offensive, I suggest that:
- they post it
- we discuss it
- we learn from the discussion
I will only remove a photo if the discussion is becoming harmful to the group and the purpose of the site.
I get the same feeling of tranquility as Rex. Clean and light with not a soul in sight. And those clean streets......
The play of the leaves (?) on the shop front and the lack of same on the tree is interesting.
