Signs of Skye

Comments:
Sraid, stryd, street - Gaelic, Welsh, English. The big difference between Wales and Scotland is that in the former the red and white sign would be in both Welsh and English. An interesting observation of the accretion of signs over time and the preservation of an ancient language as a nod to heritage. For centuries the Celtic fringe didn't bother with emergencies - a very English concept but Health and Safety has found its way here.

Rex, I think the geometry of this is what makes it work. The drain pipe (?) on the right side of the frame provides a good bounding element.

Perhaps there is a bit too much white space in the center of this shot. I'd be curious to see what this shot looked like framed as a vertical without the red box in the bottom left. The other two signs migh then appear to float off the drain pipe standing in for a sign pole.

I didn't think about leaving out the GR Pillar Box as that was a UK link which I wanted.

I did have some others which included more 'street signage' to the right of the drain and others which also included the path and the tail pipe of the drain.

This image gave me most pleasure.

Only levels and curves manipulated, the GR box was very dark in the original.

I keep trying to imagine this with just the letter box element, losing the other two signs and the down pipe. What that says about me I don't know. I guess I've completely missed any heritage meaning in the image and see it as a collection of coloured objects. Or that's what I keep trying to turn it into.

Increasingly this part of Scotland is dual signed as well. Anything faintly official - including the supermarket in Kyle - has gone dual language in the past 24 months. Go back next year to see if the health and safety sign has been changed!

What I find missing about this frame is any sign (no pun) of life. These are all official signs. Where is the ad for the local band, or the car boot sale? One of the things that I've noticed about Britain since returning here is that the tension between order and chaos has moved towards order.

That is not a fault with the photo, of course. The photo documents what was there. But, I do find that 'keep clear' sign depressing, and that colours my reaction to the picture.

I'm trying to work out which emergency exit to keep clear of? Are letters about to be expelled. I enjoy abstract signage. Well balanced, great texture and strong use of colours and position. The weeping rust is the icing.
