through the window

taken in the early 80s. from outdoors through the window while the musician was preparing for his concert.
Comments:
Somehow I get the feeling of imprisonment. This is probably due to the chains and the shadows. It is an interesting expression too. Almost a 'what the hell do you think you are doing?". The lighting on his face is good and the eye really goes to it.
A very strange mix: '70s facial hair (a la Zappa), '80s clothes and medieval ironmongery. Inadvertently, presumably, the line of the bass echoes some of the iron work and its shadow. He looks slightly out of place, not surprisingly, and you were probably the last straw. Overall, just a touch of the surreal.
What a strange picture. Is that hostility or surprise? The musician probably wasn't aware of his surroundings or you might have got a smile. The clothes make it. A bow tie wouldn't have been the same.
The expression on the musicians face is, I would hazard a guess, typical of many musicians who busy themselves with the finer points of instrument tuning. The tilting of the head so that the ear is better placed to pick up the sound is the order of the day (I do it with my guitar). His expression is one of a man who is sharing his senses, with the predominant sense of hearing being interrupted by visual disturbance, presumably the strange (and I am sure very handsome) guy with a camera at the window.
A wonderful photograph of an artist at work (in what looks very much like a dungeon of some kind????).
My first look was responded to by much too busy for my taste. After leaving it for a few days and returning I'm left appreciating this picture much more. I enjoy playing with shadows and this shot has it in spades. The cock of the head, the whites of the eyes and the grip on the cello create a strong focus. I'd lose everything below the full bar at the bottom of the picture though.
thanks all. there is another shot with a quite different musician's expression...
through the window 2
viewing both images I guess he was posing (can't really remember. u know its about 25 years ago ;)
at that time I did a lot of concert/backstage photography. lucky me I had the opportunity. these days are gone.
nowadays it has become quite difficult to shoot on concerts...
The second shot looks posed and unnatural. The first is the winner. The grip he has on the cello makes it seem like he's holding a gun...ready to take aim and play?
My first thought was, I recognise that face. It's that scruffy detective off that US Police TV show from the 80's. Un/Fortunately I cannot recall his name or the show's name!
I too think he is cocking an ear to the cello and I like the way his head is in the Vee created by the neck of the cello and the vertical bar.
Currently I feel that there is no obvious link between the environment and the musician and that the juxtaposition/contrast is insufficient to have humour or make a statement.
