Tradition and Progress

again motivated by another ones posting ;)
wind turbines seen through the cenotaphs of Bada Bagh near Jaisalmer, Rajasthan/India in the Thar Desert.
Comments:
This really captures the old and new. The cenotaphs are beautufully lit with super lighting. I love the sprinkling of highlights and the detail in the walls. One has gone back in time ..... and then ..... the machines from the War of the Worlds. A modern blot on the landscape. Contrasting with and totally out of sync with the foreground. A story well told.
I'm glad to see that India is using wind turbines; they should be tapping into solar too. The light in this is very richly coloured, from stone to sky. I am glad that you were motivated to post this. As JL says, there is a story: I don't necessarily find the contrast out of synch though, merely part of a continuum. Being led through the window is a way of starting a new chapter.
It is a chronological juxtaposition for me and I like it.
The pools of sunlight lead through to the windmills.
I notice these windmills are not going round...................
I agree that this is more about continuity than discontinuity. I see no 'out of synch'. Too often the old is photographed in such a way as to make us forget that it was originally new. That it had a purpose which was more than a tourist destination.
I live in a place where development is effectively frozen because of some historic buildings. This doesn't matter to me because my house already exists and I'm not trying to build a business. Maybe Britain is rich enough to make this decision. Maybe India isn't.
That this picture provokes such thoughts is good.
Strong uprights from the past and from the present encourage me to compare and contrast with the result that the windmills are made to look ultra modern. A good picture, with quality light and shadow and an excellent little surprise at the end.
Whilst the cenotaphs provide an excellent lead in/boarder to the windmills in the distance, I find that the shards of light bring my eye in much quicker. Simple and effective use of shape, texture and contrast. Is there detail in the dark middle top section?
thanks guys.
