Namib Desert

I have attempted to show the vast expanse of the Namib Desert. It is often said that you should fill the frame with the subject. I do not always agree with the rules but in this case, I have filled the image with the main subject - emptyness.

Comments:
Welcome John. I have seen your work on Pegasus (as invited to do so by Rex in the past) and am glad that you will be involved here.

Yes, it is quite sobering to think about that vast expanse (although I'm sure that Attenborough would find a beetle or two existing on next to nothing!). Maybe the giraffe is wondering about the wisdom of being where it is! Whatever, I like your balancing of sand and sky and the position of the giraffe.

So my first thoughts when I saw this were oh wow. Not a particularly helpful bit of feedback!

The image does effectively convey the feeling of vastness by the strategic placement and size of the giraffe. The muted tones and the long shadow add to the feeling of isolation.

The fact that this image breaks 'rules' is, for me, the icing on the cake!

Just out of curiosity, what does it eat?

You mean that there isn't a rule of thirtieths?

I can think of lots of ways in which this composition would have been less good, but none in which it could have been better.

I feel I want to go up to the giraffe and ask it what it is doing there. Is it all right? Does it need directions, perhaps?

As Rex said. Wow.

Coming back to this, I do have a query about the colour. The sand has a slightly cold (almost bluish) hue, which is also evident on the giraffe; is there a reason for that?

Thanks for your comments. The were several giraffe around, as it was near a water hole. We are right on the edge of the desert, so there was probably food behind me. I am not sure about the blue tint. I will recheck my master copy.

welcome John,
unsusal nature shot. I don't fear empty space as long it's filled. u've filled empty space well. just three visible elements: sky, desert and giraffe. simple but effective pictured vastness. like this kind of image. like this.
just curious: digital or film? tele or wide angle?

Taken with film, using a 400mm lens and rifle grip.
