Waves, Wet & Windy

Comments:
I always wonder where shots are taken. This must be the South coast judging by the colour of the water. One can't fault the dynamic around this shot: diagonals from the crest of the wave, the counter angle of the break of the wave and the entry of the board to the picture. The surfer's position also gives the feel of movement. It is the water though, that I like best. It is not particularly rough but there are lot of nuances to the surface and the foam: small ripples and areas of shadow and reflections.

I like the composition of this, I did a bit of a crop off right and bottom and I was pleased to be able to capture it. I only have the standard 14-54mm lens and I normally ignore subjects requiring telephoto! This was taken from Bournemouth pier as the surfers caught the waves towards the pier. Often they were abandoning the wave rather than smash into the pier. I took quite a few but this pleased me the most. I stacked up all the layers in PS as per the tutorials but I did not need to do much. The biggest apparent improvement came in the RAW convertion by PS CS2.

PS. Thanks for your comment John.

Rex,

I was going to ask where you were standing (private helicopter!) but I see you've already answered that above.

I like the division of the shot between the churn and the calm. Pictorially, the calm areas are especially attractive.

You mention "tutorials". If you've seen the photoshop tutorials on the radiant vista site you would know that you should have added a lot of fake blue cranked the contrast up to max. I'm very glad you ignored that tutorial and that Bournemouth hasn't relocated to Honolulu.

This is so nearly monochrome. Did you consider doing a conversion?

It was the radiantvista tutorials that I had looked at. Doing what they say either did nothing or at the point it did do something looked absurd! However as I am an ex-Corel man and gave that up due to lack of on-line help or free help, I am not going to knock radiantvista!

I have only converted a few images to B&W, again I only mastered using Corel for artistic B&W conversion about the time I got PS, ironic really. I tend to like monochromatic images, the final commitment to B&W doesn't often seem needed with many of my images.

Thanks for the feedback

Rex,

I think the level of free information on radiatvista is fantastic. More power to their elbow. I just don't like the outcomes very often. However, as examples of what is possible they are great.

"I tend to like monochromatic images, the final commitment to B&W doesn't often seem needed with many of my images." Makes it sound like you work in the twilight zone. Looking forward to seeing more.

If this was my shot I would not think of converting: I find it rare that a good monochrome comes out better in b/w.

*lol* yes, looks like taken from a private helicopter. excellent shot. even as a non real tele shot. great combination/composition of movement in the upper, the calm water in the lower and the not centered surfer. the waves worked for you and your compo. also excellent processing. also love the nearly monchromatic appearance. no need to convert into b/w IMHO. amazing sports shot.
